Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use adverb clauses of reason ( as, because, since), conditional sentences: type 1, adjectives and adverbs to make sentences with adjective + that clause. 2. Practice skill: - Practice reading , writing , listening, speaking skill. 3. The knowledge needs to get: + Standard knowledge: using adverb clauses of reason ( as, because, since), conditional sentences: type 1, adjectives and adverbs to make sentences with adjective + that clause. + Advanced knowledge: Writing sentences.. 4. Basic language: Adverb clauses of reason ( as, because, since), conditional sentences: type 1, adjectives and adverbs to make sentences with adjective + that clause. -Vocabulary: - sigh, amazed, disappointed . exhaust fume , cope, respiratory ideal , pesticide, inedible . 5. Attitude:- Help ss to have good consciousness in order to do ex. Educate the Ss to love and protect the environment. B. Teaching- aids: Lesson plan, textbooks, pictures, poster. computer. C. Methods: - Model-Talk-Practice, individual work, pair work - Some techniques can be used: Pelmanism, Noughts and Crosses. Matching, Sentence completion. D. Procedure : I.Organization: ( 1 minute) - Greeting: Good morning! - Who’s absent today? Class Date of teaching Absent students 9A 9B 9C 9D Steps/ Activities Content II. WARM UP (3 minutes) Pelmanism: - Prepare 12 cards with numbers on one side and the adjectives ( 6 cards ), adverbs ( 6 cards ) on the other side. - Make sure the adjectivies and adverbs are mixed up. - Stick the cards on the board so students can only see the number. - Divide the students into two teams and ask them to choose two numbers. - Turn the cards over and see if they match. E.g: happy - happily, give them one mark. If not, turn the cards over again and ask the next team to choose number. - Continue until all the cards are finished. III. NEW LESSON (25 minutes) I Presentation : 1. Revision of adjectives and adverbs II. Practice : Language Focus 1 (page 53). - Ask students to use the adverbs provided in “Pelmanism game” to complete the sentences on Language Focus 1 on page 53. - Get students to work in pairs. - Give feedback. * Answer key: b. The old man walked slowly to the park. c. Tuan sighed sadly when he heard that he failed the test. d. The baby laughed happily as she played with her toys. e. Mrs. Nga speak English quite well. I Presentation : Set the scene to introduce the structure: adjective + that clause II. Practice : EX - Let students work in pairs to complete the dialogues. - Give feedback. * Answer keys: b. I’m excited that I can go to Dalat this time. c. I’m sorry that I broke your bicycle yesterday. d. I’m disappointed that you did not phone me about it. e. I’m amazed that I could win first prize. - Call on some students to practice the dialogues. - Let all students work in pairs. I Presetation : 2. Revision of adverb clause of reason with BECAUSE, SINCE, AS. - Give two students sentences and ask students to combine them into one. * Answer: Ba is tired because he stayed up late watching TV (main clause) (adverb clause of reason) - Ask students to use other words for BECAUSE * Answer: SINCE, AS II. Practice : - Let students work in pairs and complete the sentences with because/ as/ since/ if/ when, or so. - Call on some students to read aloud their sentences. - Correct if necessary. I Presetation : Conditional sentences type 1. - Set the scene to introduce the structure of Conditional sentences type 1. - Write the statement on the board... - Ask students to complete the sentence by filling in each blank with one suitable word. *Answer: If we pollute the water, we will have no fresh water to use. II. Practice : Matching: - Have students do the Language Focus 4 exercise on page 56. They have to match each half - sentence in column A with a suitable one in column B. - Ask students to work in pairs and find out five complete conditional sentences. III. Production : 1. Noughts and Crosses - Divide the class into teams. One team is Noughts ( O ) and the other is Crosses ( X ). - Two teams choose the words in the boxes in turns and make sentence with the structure. If the sentence is correct, they’ll get one mark. - The team which has 3 noughts or 3 crosses on a line will win the game. - Draw this chart on the board and the games begins. Model sentence: I’m amazed that you win the game. * Answer keys: 1. I’m happy that I passed the exam. 2. I’m sorry that I broke the vase. 3. We are excited that we could go abroad. 4. He’s pleased that his his son is studying hard 5. I’m amazed that they won the game. 6. I’m disappointed that you didn’t tell me about that. 7. I’m sure that you like this film. 8. I’m surprised that they won the match. 9. We’re delighted that the show was interesting. 2. Sentence completion (LF5) - Teach students how to do the test. Give them an example. If the rice paddies are polluted....( rice plant/ die ) =>If the rice paddies are polluted, the rice plant will die. - Have students work in pairs and write the complete sentences in their notebooks. - Give feedback IV. SUMMARY (1’) - Use adjectives and adverbs to make sentences with adjective + that clause. V. HOMEWORK (1 minutes) - Ask students to write 5 sentences using the structure adjective + that clause and conditional sentences type 1. - Prepare the next lesson: Unit 7: Getting started, Listen and read. extreme fast happy well sad slowly good extremely slow sadly fast happily 1. Adjectives and adverbs Adj. + LY = Adverb of manner * Adjectives can come in two places in a sentence. - Before anoun : a nice girl, new shoes ... - After the verb : be, look, appear, seem, feel, taste, sound, smell... These shoes are new. That soup smell good. * Adverbs normally go after the direct object : I read the letter carefully. * If there is no direct object, the adverb goes after the verb She walked slowly. * Language Focus 1 2. Adjective + that clause Eg: Ba: Dad! I got mark 9 on my test. Father: That’s wonderful. I’m pleased that you are working hard. * Form: S + be + adjective + that clause. * EX : ( 1 ) happy/ pass exam ( 2 ) sorry/ break the vase ( 3 ) excited/ go abroad ( 4 ) pleased / study hard ( 5 ) amazed / win the game ( 6 ) disappointed / not tell about that ( 7 ) sure/ like this film ( 8 ) surprised/ win the match ( 9 ) delighted/ show/ interesting 4. Adverb clause of reason with BECAUSE, SINCE, AS. Eg: - Ba is tired. - He stayed up late watching TV. => ..... Ex. Complete the sentences with because/ as/ since/ if/ when, or so. 1. We decided to go out to eat _______ we had no food at home. 2. He has a very important job _______ he is particularly well-paid. 3. Can I borrow that book _______ you’ve finished it? 4. No one was watching the television _______ I switched it off. 5. _______ she changed a lot, we didn’t recognize her. 6. _______ you’ve ready, we can start now. 7. I’m going away for a few days, I’ll phone you _______ I get back. 8. You should inform the police _______ your bicycle is stolen. 9. Mathew went to bed _______ it was too late to go out. 10. _______ you drive without driving license, you’re breaking the law. 11. ________the weather was bad, they delayed their trip. 12. Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use the connectives: and, but, because, or, so, therefore, however and some phrasal verbs, and make suggestions. 2. Practice skill: - Practice reading, writing, doing ex. 3. The knowledge needs to get: + Standard knowledge: Complete the sentences, make suggestions. + Advanced knowledge: Do ex well. Give the examples using structures. 4. Basic language: - Vocabulary: organize, raise/reiz/, war invalid/’ invə¸li:d/ , shortage, decade /'dekeɪd hoặc dɪ'keɪd/, assignment. - Structure: The simple present, conditional sentense. 5. Attitude: - Help ss to have good consciousness in order to practice completing the sentences, making suggestions. B. Teaching- aids: Textbook, computer, posters. C. Methods: - Model-Talk-Practice, individual work, pair work - Some techniques can be used: Bingo, Brainstorming, Noughts and Crosses. D. Procedure : I.Organization: ( 1 minute) - Greeting: Good morning! - Who’s absent today? Class Date of teaching Absent students 9A 9B 9C Steps/ Activities Content II. WARM UP (5 minutes) * Bingo: - Ask students to write down in their notebooks 5 verbs with prepositions. - Prepare a list of verbs + prepositions. Then call out each word in a loud voice. - Students listen to the teacher carefully. If anyone has the same verb + prepositions, they cross it out. The first student crossing out all 5 verbs + prepositions shout “Bingo” and win the game. III. NEW LESSON (36minutes) Presentation 1 : CONNECTIVES: AND, BUT, BECAUSE, OR, SO, THEREFORE, HOWEVER CÁC TỪ NỐI: VÀ, NHƯNG, BỞI VÌ, HOẶC, CHO NÊN, DO ĐÓ, TUY NHIÊN Connectives (các từ nối): and, but, because, or, so, therefore, however có chức năng nối các từ, các mệnh đề, các câu lại với nhau. 1. And (và): dùng để thêm thông tin vào câu nói EX: My hobbies are playing soccer and listening to music. 2. But (nhưng): dùng để nêu lên hai thông tin đối ngược nhau EX; I want other car but I have no money. 3. Or (hoặc): dùng để giới thiệu một khả năng khác EX: Would you like tea or coffee? 4. So (do đó, cho nên, vì vậy): dùng để chỉ kết quả, hệ quả, phía trước so luôn có dấu phẩy ngăn cách EX: It’s raining, so I’ll stay home and read. 5. Because (bởi vì): dùng để chỉ nguyên nhân, luôn đứng trước mệnh đề phụ thuộc EX: I failed in my exam because I didn’t study. 6. Therefore (do đó, cho nên): dùng để nêu lên kết quả của sự việc được nhắc đến trong câu trước đó EX: I passed the test; therefore, my parents took me to the circus. 7. However (tuy nhiên): dùng để giới thiệu một sự việc có ý nghĩa trái ngược với sự việc được nhắc trước đó EX: I feel sleepy, however, I must finish the report. 2. Cụm động từ (phrasal verb) là sự kết hợp giữa một động từ và một từ nhỏ (particle). Từ nhỏ, particle(s), này có thể là một trạng từ (adverb), hay là một giới từ (preposition), hoặc là cả hai: Ex: The rich man gave away most of his fortune. (Người giàu có ấy tặng hầu hết tài sản của ông ta cho người nghèo.) - Provide students 5 verbs + prepositions and then ask them to match the verbs with the pictures on page 63 . Answer keys: - Picture 1: look after the baby. - Picture 2: go on (wasting paper) - Picture 3: turn on TV. - Picture 4: look for. - Picture 5: turn off the faucet. Practice - Have students work in pairs to do Language Focus 2 exercise on page 63. They have to use suitable verbs to complete the sentences. Presentation 3 Making suggestions - Review some structures to make suggestions S + Suggest + v- ing… S + Suggest + that +S + should + V- infinitive … CẦN NHỚ : * Suggest + Ving => câu đề nghị có người nói cùng làm. Ví dụ: Mary suggested going to the cinema. Mary đề nghị đi xem phim ( cô ấy cũng đi cùng với người nghe ) * Suggest that + S (should ) + V bare inf. => câu đề nghị chỉ có S làm ( người nói không làm) Practice - Ask Ss to work in pairs to make suggestions , using the ideas in the textbook . - Example : A : What should we do to help poor people in the neighborhood ? B : I suggest collecting unused clothes I suggest that we should collect unused clothes and give them to the poor people in the neighborhood - Call on some Ss to read aloud their suggestions Production : Noughts and Crosses: - Divide the class into two teams. One team is Nought ( O ) and the other is Cross ( X ). - Have two teams choose the words in the boxes in turns. And make sentences with the connectives given. If the sentence is correct, they will get one mark. - The team which has 3 Noughts or 3 Crosses in a line will win the game. - Draw this chart on the board and the game begins. * Possible answers: 1) Do you want to take a bath or take a shower? 2) I’ll get a plumber to check the pipes and to repair the faucets. 3) He got up late so he had to take a taxi to school. 4) It’s raining but he is still going swimming. 5) Her English is not good therefore she decides to practice more. 6) Baths use twice as much water, so I suggest taking showers. 7) The water bill is enormous this month because there is a crack in the pipes. 8) I suggest taking showers and fixing the faucet.
