Cách chuyển đổi từ câu trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp: - đổi chủ ngữ tân ngữ tính từ sở hữu trong câu trực tiếp sao cho phù hợp với ngữ cảnh - thay đổi thì của động từ (lùi thì) - biến đổi các đại từ chỉ thị trạng từ chỉ thời gian địa điểm. Một số hình thức câu gián tiếp cơ bản a) Reporting statements (câu trần thuật) "I m very happy." Annie said. → Annie said (that) she was very happy. "We like oranges." → They said (that) they liked oranges. Thường sử dụng các động từ tường thuật như: said said to told reported .... b) Reporting commands and requests Cấu trúc: S + V (asked/ told ...) + O + to (not to) + V ... Ex: "Shut the door Tom" he said. → He told Tom to shut the door. Cách chuyển đổi: + đổi động từ tường thuật sang: told (bảo) asked (yêu cầu ra lệnh) advised (khuyên) persuaded (thuyết phục) begged (van xin) ...tuỳ theo ngữ cảnh lời nói. + tìm tân ngữ đặt ngay sau động từ tường thuật trên + bỏ dấu hai chấm ngoặc kép + với câu mệnh lênh khẳng định chuyển động từ mệnh lệnh thành To V; với câu mệnh lệnh phủ định chuyển động từ mệnh lệnh thành Not to V + biến đổi thì của động từ đại từ nhân xưng đại từ sở hữu các từ chỉ thời gian sao cho phù hợp với ngữ cảnh c) Reporting questions (câu hỏi) 1) Yes/ No questions (câu hỏi có câu trả lời là Có hoặc Không) She + asked/ wanted to know/ wondered + (O) + if/ whether + mệnh đề Ex: Mary said to Nam "Can you speak English?" → Mary asked Nam if/ whether he could speak English. "Do you go to school?" he asked → He asked if I went to school. 2) Wh - questions (Câu hỏi có từ để hỏi) S + V + (O) + who/ what ... + Mệnh đề Ex: Betty said to Jane "What are you doing?" → Betty asked Jane what she was doing. "When did your sister leave for Danang?" asked Tina. → Tina asked me when my sister had left for Danang. 3. Chú ý - khi động từ tường thuật ở các thi hiện tại hoặc tương lai các thì cảu động từ trong câu trực tiếp không đổi các từ chỉ thời gian và nơi chốn vẫn giữ nguyên She says "Tim won the scholarship last week." → She says Tim won the scholarship last week. - khi lời nói trực tiếp diễn tả một chân lý sự kiện hiển nhiên định luật khoa học động từ của lời nói trực tiếp không đổi thì He said "Ice melts in the sun." → He said (that) ice melts in the sun. Step 3. Practice : 11’ Reported questions - Have students do Language focus 4 exercise on page 39. - Ask students to work in pairs to change the direct speech questions into reported questions. - Set the scene: “This morning Nga had an interview for a summer job. When she arrived home, she told her mother about the interview”. - Give the example first. Example 1: S1: Do you like pop music? S2: She asked me if/ whether I liked pop music. Example 2: S1: Where do you live? S2: She asked me where I lived. - Call on some pairs to do practice before class. - Give feedback and correct. Step 3. Production : 7’ Lucky numbers - Write numbers on the board ( 1 - 12 ) - Tell students that each number is for a question but four of them are lucky numbers. For a lucky number, student will get 2 points without answering any questions. For other numbers, students have to turn the direct speech ( from the teacher ) to the reported speech. If their sentence is correct, that team will get 2 marks, if it is incorrect, the other team will answer and gets only one mark for their correct answer. * Questions : Paul asked the students some questions about the college. Imagine that he also reports his questions to the English friend. (Paul hỏi các sinh viên những câu hỏi về tường đại học. Tưởng tượng rằng anh ấy tường thuật các câu hỏi của anh ấy cho người bạn nước Anh của anh ấy) 1. Lucky number. 2. "What's the name of the college?" 3. "How many students are there in the college?" 4. "Who is the headmaster?" 5. Lucky number. 6. "How big are the classes?" 7. "Are the classes streamed?" 8. Lucky number. IV. SUMMARY Direct and Reported speech, reported questions. A new student, Paul, has come to a foreign language college and the students are asking him questions. Imagine that he reports these questions later to an English friend. Revision of Modal verbs: - Ask students to name some modal verbs with their meanings. Revision of Conditional sentences type 1 If clause - (simple present tense) Main clause ( will + infinitive) * Usage: We can use a modal verbs in a main clause. The modal verb gives more information about the outcome relating to ability, certainty, permission, obligation or necessity. Eg: - If you want to improve your English, I can help you. - If you want to get good grades, you must study hard. Changes in adverb and articles . * Matching - Stick a poster of adverbs and articles on the board. - Divide the class into two teams. - Get students from 2 teams to go to the board and write the pairs of adverbs or articles in direct speech and in reported speech. Reported questions: * In reported questions, we do not use the auxiliary verb ( do, does, did ) * When there is no question word ( what, where, why...) we use “if” or “whether” to introduce a reported question. * In reported questions, the word order is the same as in statements. ( eg. they were doing, my brother was ) and we do not use a question mark. EX: The following are some more questions both Mrs. Smith and Nam asked.
