Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to get general background information on some common natural disasters such as earthquakes, tidal waves, typhoon, volcanoes and tornadoes through 2 comprehension exercise: "true/ false and" " sentence completion" 2. Practice skill: - Practice the comprehension reading skill. 3. The knowledge needs to get: + Standard knowledge: To get general background information on some common natural disasters + Advanced knowledge: To write about natural disasters 4. Basic language: - Vocabulary: Tidal wave, hurricane = cyclone = typhoon (n), tornado (n), erupt ( v) suck up ( v ), shift ( n ), funnel - shaped ( adj ). 5. Attitude: - Help ss to have good consciousness in order to get general background information on some common natural disasters . B. Teaching- aids: Textbook, pictures, posters, Cd, computer, video and the picture of natural disasters . C. Methods: - Model-Talk-Practice, individual work, pair work - Some techniques can be used: Chatting, Prediction. D. Procedure : I.Organization: ( 1 minute) - Greeting: Good morning! - Who’s absent today? Class Date of teaching Absent students 9A 9B 9C Steps/ Activities Content II. WARM UP (5 minutes) Brainstorming: snowstorm, earthquake, volcano, typhoon. * Chatting - Give students some questions about the four natural disasters. . How do you know it is a snowstorm/ earthquake/ a volcano/ a typhoon? . Have you ever experienced any of these natural disasters? What happened? How did you feel? III. NEW LESSON (35minutes) I. Pre Reading : 1. Vocabulary : 1. ( picture ) 2. ( synonym: quick, sudden ) 3. ( picture) 4. ( picture ) 5. ( visual ) 6. ( change to ) 7. ( picture ) Sts : - listen. - listen and repeat (chorally then individually). - copy. * Checking vocabulary: Rub out and remember - Rub out the words one at time, each time you torub out the word in English, point to the Vietnemese translation and ask students to repeat again. When all the English words are rubbed out, go through the Vietnamese list and get students to call out the English words. 2. True - False statements predictions - Set the scene: you are going to read a passage about 5 disasters that we have mentioned earlier. There are 6 statements about the information of some natural disasters. All of you have to read them and guess whether they are true or false. - Hang the poster of T/F statements ( on page 79)on the board. - Get students to work in pairs to guess which statements are true and which are false. - Give feedback. II. While Reading : 1. Reading and checking - Have students read the text on page 78 and check their prediction. Get students to correct false statements. 2. Complete the sentences: - Have students work in pairs and complete the sentences in exercise 5b on page 79. III. Post Reading : Asking and Answering: - Divide the class into four groups. - Have students read the text again. - Group 1 ask a question, group 2, 3, 4 answer it. - Group 2 ask another question, group 1, 3, 4 answer. - Go on until the four groups ask their questions * Possible answers: 1. Why do people call the Pacific Rim “Ring of Fire”? - Because 90% of earthquakes occur around the Pacific Rim. 2. What will happen when there is an abrupt shift in the underwater movement of the earth? - Tidal waves will happen. 3. What does “typhoon” mean? - It means “big wind”. 4. Can we predict a volcano? - Yes. SUMMARY (2 minutes) - Reading a text about natural disasters in the world. V. The knowledge needs to get: + Standard knowledge: To write a story. + Advanced knowledge: To write a story well. 4. Basic language: -Vocabulary: - behave ( v )- shelter ( n )- all of sudden. shine, scared, save 5. Attitude: - Help ss to have good consciousness in order to practice writing. B. Teaching- aids: Textbook, pictures, posters, Cd, computer. C. Methods: - Model-Talk-Practice, individual work, pair work - Some techniques can be used: Questions and Answers, Telling the story, Writing, Correction. D. Procedure : I.Organization: ( 1 minute) - Greeting: Good morning! - Who’s absent today? Class Date of teaching Absent students 9A 9B 9C Steps/ Activities Content II. WARM UP (5 minutes) Questions and Answers: - Ask Ss some questions to lead in the lesson. + Have you ever written a story? What is it about? + How long did it take to you write it? + Did you write it in Vietnamese or in English? + Do you think it is a successful one? III. NEW LESSON (35minutes) I. Pre Writing: 1. Vocabulary : -Elicit – repeat( chorally, individually) – copy - check (meaning, stress, part of speech) ( translation ) ( definition: a place of safety ) ( synonym: suddenly ) Sts : - listen. - listen and repeat (chorally then individually). - copy. *Checking vocabulary: what and where - Have students repeat the words chorally then rub out word by word but leave the circles. Remember to let students repeat before and after rubbing out each word. - Go on until students can remember the words. - Get students to write the words again in the correct circles. 2. Telling the story - Show six pictures on the board. - Set the scene: This is Lan’s family, they are at home. - Ask some questions to elicit the story. 1. Picture 1: - Who is this? It’s Lan. - Where is she? She’s outside/ in the garden. - What is she doing? She’s playing with her dog, Skippy. 2. Picture 2: - How is the dog? It looks strange. Perhaps it is scared. 3. Picture 3: - What’s on TV? The weather forecast. - What does Lan’s mother say? She tells Lan that she has just heard on TV that there is a typhoon coming. 4. Picture 4: - What are they doing? There are gathering and talking about the coming typhoon. 5. Picture 5: - What’s the weather like now? It is very dark. It has strong wind and heavy rain. 6. Picture 6: - What’s the weather like now? It’s fine. - How are they now? They are all happy. - Ask some students to look at the pictures and retell the story. II. While Writing: - Have students write a story individually. The cues in the box on page 79 will help students to write easily. - Ask students to use past tense. - Go around and help students to write. * Sample: It was a beautiful day. The sun was shiny, the sky was blue and the weather was perfect. Lan was outside playing with her dog, Skippy. All of a sudden, the dog began behaving strangely. She kept running around circles. Lan ran home with her dog to tell her mother what Skippy was doing. Lan’s mother’s, Mrs. Quyen told Lan that she heard on TV that there was a typhoon coming. Mrs. Quyen gathered her family and told them to find shelter in the house. Suddenly, the sky became very dark. The storm came with strong wind and heavy rain. Mrs. Quyen and her family were scared, but soon the storm finished and everyone was glad. What a clever dog Skippy is. She saved Lan from being caught in the typhoon. III. Post Writing: - Get students to share with their partners and correct mistakes. * Correction: - Take some writing to correct on front of the class. - Ask students to rewrite their writings. - Collect their papers and correct. IV. SUMMARY (2 minutes) - Writing a story. V. HOMEWORK (2 minutes) - Get students to write another story. They can make changes or add more details to the story. -Prepare the next lesson: Language focus 1 + Review 1. Vocabulary : - behave ( v ): cư xử, ứng xử - shelter ( n ): chỗ trú ngụ - all of sudden : bất ngờ, bỗng dưng - Shine (v) chiếu sáng - scared (a) sợ - save (v) cứu thoát 2. Writing: - Lan is outside playing with her dog. - All of a sudden, the dog behaves strangely. - Lan ran home and her mother tells her that there is a typhoon coming. - Mrs. Quyen gathers her family and asks them to find shelter in the house. - Suddenly, it becomes dark. The storm comes with strong wind and heavy rain. - The storm finishes soon and everyone is glad. 3. Homework : *.
