OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, Sts will be able to 1. Knowledge - recognize the schwa sound /ə/ in the weak form of the preposition “at” and pronounce it correctly. - make and respond to suggestions about movies. - start the conversation in a friendly way. 2. Competences - improve speaking skill. - develop the ability to communicate and cooperate with their partners, to self - study, to solve problems and other skills 3. Quality - have positive attitude in English language learning so that they actively participate in all classroom activities, especially about the topic “movies”. II. TEACHING AIDS AND LEARNING MATERIALS. Lesson plan, PPT slides, S’s book, workbook, notebook, personal computer (if any), projector/TV, speakers, DCR & DHA on EDUHOME, handouts… III. PROCEDURE A. Activity 1: Warm up (5’) a) Objective: To help Sts relax and introduce the topics in such a way as to arouse Ss' interest. b) Content: Listening to a song c) Product: Sts can sing famous songs such as: "My heart will go on".... d) Organization of the activity: Teacher's and Students’ activities Contents * Review the previous lesson: - T gives Ss some sentences and ask them to fill in the blanks with suitable prepositions. - Ss work individually - T has Ss give answers - Ss give answers - T gives feedback and corrects - T briefly explains the pronunciation feature. Sound Changes : "…at…" often sounds like /ət/ (but not at the start) - T leads in the new lesson. 1. Let's meet _____ Tuesday. 2. Do you want to go there ________ the morning? 3. Let's meet at the park _______ noon. 4. I like going to the beach _______ the weekend. 5. What's on the TV __________ midnight. 6. Activity 2: Pronunciation (5’) a) Objective: To be aware of how the sound of the preposition "at" changes when unstressed and pronounce it correctly b) Content: Listening and repeating c) Products: Sts pronounce the unstressed "at" correctly. d) Organization of the activity: Teacher's and Students’ activities Contents * Presentation: - T briefly explains the pronunciation feature - Ss listen - T plays the audio and draws attention to the pronunciation feature. (CD2 - 17) - Ss listen - T plays the audio again and asks Ss to practice * Practice - T plays the audio feature. (CD2 - 17) and asks Ss to do the task c - Ss listen and do the task - T play the audio again and check the answers - T has Ss read the sentences aloud to their partners - Ss read - T checks Ss’ pronunciation mistakes. *Production - T has Ss give some more examples - Ss give the examples and read aloud. a. "... at..." often sounds like /ət/ (but not at the start). b. Listen. Notice the sound changes of the underlined words. Track 17 M: It's on at seven-thirty. My lesson's at ten. c. Listen and cross out the one with the wrong sound changes. Answers: The movie starts at 7:30. – Wrong. Doesn't use the weak form. Track 18 M: I’m playing soccer at 2 p.m. The movie starts at 7:30. d. Read the sentences with the correct sound changes to a partner. Eg: My class’s at 9 It’s on at 6:30 C. Activity 3: Practice (15’) a) Objective: To make and respond to suggestions about movies b) Content: Practicing the conversation; swapping roles and repeating; practicing with their own ideas c) Products: Sts can make and respond to suggestions about movies. d) Organization of the activity: Teacher's and Students’ activities Contents Presentation - T demonstrates the activity - Ss listen - T models first - St models with T Practice T asks students to work in pairs and practice the conversation. - Ss work in pairs - T has Ss swap roles and repeat using the ideas given. - Ss swap roles practicing the conversation - T has some pairs present in front of the class. Production - T asks Ss to work in pairs and practice the conversation with their ideas, then swap the roles. - Ss work in pairs - T allows time for students to do the task. - T monitors the activity around the class. - Some pairs demonstrate the activity in front of the class. - T gives feedback and corrects if necessary. Activity 4: Speaking - IT'S MOVIE NIGHT! (15’) a) Objective: To start the conversation in a friendly way and to use the language learnt earlier in communication b) Content: Working in pairs; joining another pair to form a group c) Products: Sts can start a conversation in a friendly way and can use what they have learnt to produce the language d) Organization of the activity: Pre speaking: - T sets the context of speaking task - Ss listen - T demonstrates the dialogue by practicing with a good St - St practice with T - T gets Ss to turn to page 122, File 6 - Ss do as requested. While speaking: - T divides the class into pairs. - Ss work in pairs - T gets Ss to choose movies to watch on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday ( students turn to page 122, File 6) - Ss look at the movies listed and choose a movie to watch on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday using the movie schedule. - T monitors - Ss work in pairs to practice the conversation. - T corrects the pronunciation mistakes if necessary. Post speaking: - T encourages Ss make their own similar conversation - Ss join another pairs to practice - T controls - T calls on some pairs to present in front of the class - Ss present - T corrects Ss’ pronunciation mistakes if any. Task a. You are choosing movies to watch on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Work in pairs. Turn to page 122, File 6. Task b: Join another pair. Did you choose the same movies. Homework (5’) - Practice how to pronounce the sound change. - Practice speaking with your classmate to make and respond to suggestion about movies. - Write a short paragraph about an exciting movie you have seen recently. Competences - improve the use of language, writing, speaking skills. - develop the ability to communicate and cooperate with their partners, to self-study, to solve problems and other skills 3. Quality - have positive attitude in English language learning so that they actively participate in all classroom activities, especially with the topic “movies”. II. TEACHING AIDS AND LEARNING MATERIALS. Lesson plan, PPT slides, student’s book, workbook, notebook, personal computer (if any), projector/TV, speakers, DCR & DHA on EDUHOME, handouts… III. PROCEDURE A.
